Vacancy on the Parish Council
Would you like to join the Parish Council? We have a number of vacancies and are looking to bring new councillors onto the Parish Council. We normally meet every other month, and between meetings we look at issues and discuss problems and projects, mostly by email these days.
There is more below about the responsibilities of the Parish Council.
If you are interested or would like to know more please contact any of us on the council. You can find our phone numbers further down this page.
What is a parish council
The Parish Council is the part of local government closest to the people. It serves the smallest area and is responsible for the most local of matters. Very importantly, these councils set a precept – raising a sum collected with the council tax each year to improve facilities and services for local people.
The Parish council has a number of basic responsibilities in making the lives of local communities more comfortable, many of which are often taken for granted. Essentially these powers fall within three main categories:
1. Representing the whole electorate within the parish.
2. Delivering services to meet local needs.
3. Striving to improve quality of life in the parish.
Parish council powers and duties include the provision and/or maintenance of community transport schemes, traffic calming measures, local youth projects, tourism activities, leisure facilities, car parks, village greens, public lavatories, litter bins, street lighting, street cleaning, burial grounds, allotments, bus shelters, commons, opens spaces, footpaths and bridleways. Parish Councils can also comment on planning applications – they are statutory consultees (they have to be consulted if they so wish) and can be represented at public inquiries.

Sampford Peverell Parish Council normally meets every other month, but occasionally there are extra meetings to discuss particular issues.
Our planning strategy is outlined on the Planning page here: SPPC planning
In 2015 Devon Communities Together helped the Parish Council conduct a Housing Needs Survey. The final report from this survey is attached below. We are now following this up by considering possible locations for affordable housing in the village.

In September and October 2019 another Housing Needs Survey was conducted. The full results of this survey can be found here:
